Applicants sought for Scientists in Parks program

Applications for the Scientists in Parks Fellows Program at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park are now available for the summer 2021.

The Scientists in Parks Fellow will work with the park education specialist to develop a climate change curriculum for high school students, focusing on changes to Hawaii Island. The position begins in mid-May, and 11 weeks of the internship will be in the park. A mandatory Professional Development Workshop will be held in Washington, D.C. from Aug. 1 to 5.

Eligible applicants must be: a U.S. citizen, 18 to 30 years of age (or a veteran up to age 35); enrolled as an upper-level undergraduate (junior or senior) or graduate student that will not graduate prior to finishing the project; or has already earned their undergraduate degree and is not currently enrolled, but has applied to attend graduate school beginning fall 2021.

Benefits include full-time work at $500/week for 12 weeks, employment with the Ecological Society of America, networking opportunities with National Park Service and Department of Interior leaders, mentoring by National Park Service supervisor, professional development through a workshop at the end of the summer, and the ability to earn a Direct Hire Authority upon successful completion. Direct Hire Authority allows students who excel in their internships and then subsequently complete their undergraduate or graduate degree requirements the eligibility to be hired without competition into permanent positions within the National Park Service and other select bureaus of the Department of the Interior for which they are qualified.

For more information, contact Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Education Specialist Jody Anastasio by email at jody_anastasio@nps.gov. To apply, visit www.esa.org/scientists-in-parks/available-positions/2021-09/. The application period is open until Jan. 24.

Credit union announces scholarship program

HFS Federal Credit Union recently announced it will award 10 scholarships, each worth $2,500, to selected high school and college students.

Seven of the scholarships are available for current Hawaii Island high school seniors and three are available for current college students.

Now in its ninth year, the credit union’s scholarship program has awarded over $150,000 in scholarships to over 60 student members to assist with college expenses. This is the second year that the Credit Union is also offering scholarships to current college students, since many students find less opportunities available after the first year.

Student members of HFS pursuing higher education full-time in the 2021-22 school year are eligible to apply. Recipients will be selected based on a variety of criteria, including academic performance, achievements, and community service.

For a complete list of requirements, or to apply, visit https://hfsfcu.org. Applications can also be picked up at any HFS FCU branch, which includes Hilo, Kea’au, Prince Kuhio Plaza, Honoka’a, Waimea and Kona.

Completed applications with supporting documents must be submitted to the credit union or postmarked no later than Feb. 27.
